Course Description: 

The focus of this course is on the reading, translation, and analysis of classic Gnostic and Valentinian texts in the Coptic language. Students will acquire a deeper familiarity with lexical, syntactical, and dialectical patterns in the language, building on the vocabulary and grammatical knowledge they acquired in Elementary Biblical Coptic (EGYP 117/510 and 127/511). They will acquaint themselves with a range of literary forms and systems of thought represented in the corpus of texts discovered at Nag Hammadi in Egypt. Class time will be devoted to the task of translation and to the analysis and discussion of grammatical and thematic details.

Background Expected: 

Elementary Biblical Coptic (EGYP 117/510 and 127/511) or its equivalent.

Course Requirements: 

Reading extensively in the Nag Hammadi corpus and related Coptic Gnostic material.

Basis of Evaluation: 

Ability to translate standard Sahidic and Lycopolitan Coptic prose, demonstrated by examination.
