Course Description: 

The Pro-Seminar in Greco-Roman backgrounds is designed for doctoral students in the fields of New Testament and Ancient Christianity.  It will familiarize students with philosophical, literary, and religious texts from Greco-Roman antiquity, as well as evidence of material culture relevant to the study of early Christian literature. Masters level student may be admitted by permission of the instructor.

Background Expected: 

A foundation in classics.

Course Requirements: 

Extensive reading of primary sources, regular reports, and a final exam, which for doctoral students is part of the qualifying exams required for the PhD program.

Basis of Evaluation: 

Demonstrated knowledge of primary sources and an ability to relate them to the study of early Christianity.
