Course Description: 

A close reading of the Hebrew text of the prophetic stories in the Books of Kings, with particular attention to their possible oral origin and present literary function in their present context. Their sociological and religious perspective will also be considered.

Background Expected: 

Two years of Biblical Hebrew or the equivalent; previous work in the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible

Course Requirements: 

Preparation of the Hebrew texts and secondary readings to be considered each week; one 15-25 page paper on the prophetic stories in Kings.

Basis of Evaluation: 

Participation in the class discussions; performance on the final paper.
