Medieval Latin for Saints and Sinners
T TH 1:30pm - 2:50pm
This is an introductory reading course in Late Antique and Medieval Latin that is intended to help students interested in Christian Latin sources improve their reading ability. The primary objective of the course is to familiarize students with Medieval Latin and improve their proficiency in reading and translating Medieval Latin texts. Students will come to recognize the features (grammatical and syntactical) that make Medieval Latin distinct, improve their overall command of Latin by reviewing grammar and syntax, and gain an appreciation of the immense variety of texts written in Medieval Latin.
Basic knowledge of Latin grammar and syntax, equivalent to the elementary Latin grammar classes offered by the Classics Department (Latin 110, Latin 120).
Preparation of Latin passages for translation for discussion in class. Required readings on Medieval Latin topics. Mandatory attendance.
The grade will be based on: 20% preparation and class participation (primarily translation and discussion), 20% weekly quizzes, 20% a commentary assignment, and 40% a final exam.
