Course Description: 

The main objective of the course is enable students to grasp the historical basis of an important theological idea, and to appreciate how ideas of the messiah in the Old Testament and in early Judaism differ from those that took hold in Christianity. In the process, students need to become familiar with the ideology of kingship in the ancient Near East and with the relevant materials in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Pseudepigrapha.

Background Expected: 

Ability to read Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
