Course Description: 

This course introduces students to the historiography of religious history; to the history of methods, approaches, and problems in the field, and to techniques for using and citing primary and secondary sources in the study of religion. Seminars will include lectures, common readings, writing exercises, and presentations by students and by visiting scholars. Each student will develop a research proposal related to their specific area of interest.

Background Expected: 

This course is required for MAR concentrates in the History of Christianity, who are encouraged to enroll in their first year of the program.

Book Review, 4-5 pages: 30%

Research Proposal, including discussion of historiography and sources, 12-15 pages: 60%
