Course Description: 

This course will help students to develop facility with Greek prose (and some poetry) of the Hellenistic and early Roman periods through rapid reading of a variety of literature relevant to the study of Judaism of the Second Temple period.

Background Expected: 

Intermediate Greek or equivalent

Course Requirements: 

Regular attendance, preparation of required readings, brief reports on the texts to be read.

Basis of Evaluation: 

Grading will be based (a) on a final exam (80%), which will consist of an unseen translation from a work of difficulty comparable to the readings of the course and (b) on regular participation in the course (20%). Honors grades will be given to translations that exhibit a thorough command of relevant Greek grammar and vocabulary and felicity of expression. High Pass grades will be given to translations that exhibit a thorough command of relevant Greek grammar and vocabulary.
