Transformational Leadership - Leading from Within: Personal Transformation and Social Change
Sept 23rd 4:00pm - 9:00pm, Sept 24th 8:30am - 5:00pm
In a retreat/workshop format, we will explore social movements and the kind of leadership they require. In the workshop portion, we will ground ourselves in Parker J. Palmer’s “movement model” of social change and in his five key “habits of the heart” for citizens of a democracy. In the retreat portion, participants will have a chance to reflect on where they are located on these “maps” of social reality and possibility, and on next steps toward transformational leadership in their chosen professions. The entire course will be based on the “Circle of Trust” approach created by the Center for Courage & Renewal <http://www.CourageRenewal.org>, whose principles and practices have benefited many leaders, organizations and communities. One Credit.
Three books and one article by Parker J. Palmer constitute the required reading for this course: Healing the Heart of Democracy, A Hidden Wholeness, Let Your Life Speak, and “A New Professional: The Aims of Education Revisited” in Change Magazine (from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching): <http://tinyurl.com/hw2bezl>
Students are required to complete all reading before the course begins, and to commit to attending all course sessions during these two days.
In addition to full attendance and active participation, a 10 page reflection paper is due two weeks after the completion of the weekend course.
