Course Description: 

This course will cover the history of Methodism from its eighteenth-century beginnings to the present. While basic doctrinal and theological history will be covered, the focus will be on institutional and cultural developments. Because it is designed for UMC students, the course will encourage and develop study and reflection that makes connections between history and present institutional concerns.

Background Expected: 

Students should have basic knowledge of the history of Christianity since the medieval era.

 

Course Requirements: 

Required reading every week. Brief presentations on reading every week. Final paper and presentation.

Basis of Evaluation: 

Basic attendance and class participation. Demonstrated knowledge of course readings. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to think historically and integrate that thinking into work in contemporary contexts.
