James R Skypeck
YDS degree: MAR, Ethics
MLIS, University of Rhode Island
Head Of Public Services
Boston University School of Theology Library
After leaving YDS and hoping to find a teaching job in a private school, I worked for four years in different psychiatric facilities, including a methadone clinic. I started working full-time at Brandeis University as a library supervisor after that and worked as a paraprofessional there for 4 years while I worked on getting my library science degree at the University of Rhode Island. In 2000, I was hired as the Philosophy and Religion Bibliographer at Boston University--the librarian responsible for reference and materials selection in those two academic disciplines. My degree from YDS was part of what permitted me to be hired into this position as many academic librarians are expected to have 2 Masters degrees. In the Fall of 2002, I was hired as the Head of Public Services at BU's School of Theology Library and have been there until the present. Again, having a Masters from YDS made me a stronger candidate for this position than many of the other applicants.
