Writing, Publishing, and Editing

It goes without saying that many YDS graduates are attracted to careers in fields involving writing and editing.  Careers in the field can be found for persistent and prepared graduates.

The best preparation for working in literary fields is to write, write, write! You will also want to consider volunteering for literary journals, internships and part-time jobs in writing and editing (YDS hires a few students every year to work on our publications, and Yale University press has an internship program. Other ideas would be to approach denominational magazines and alumni journals of one’s alma mater for volunteer opportunities.

Hiring cycles for publishing and editing positions are relatively short.  Positions are typically filled within two months of advertisement. Students seeking work in these fields should be prepared with a resume, thoughtful cover letter and a collection of writing samples in a variety of genres.
