Peter Marty
Peter Marty ’85 M.Div. may be known to thousands as the public host of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s popular radio show Grace Matters, but he also makes a private confession. “There is a deep secret that I rarely reveal and it is this: When preaching, teaching, or public speaking, people will sometimes say, ‘Where did you come up with that?’ or ‘I like the direction of your thinking today.’ Well, obviously a whole compilation of sources contribute to one’s heart and mind, but the secret that I rarely share in those short and spontaneous little exchanges is that Yale Divinity School shaped so much of who I am.” Peter and his wife, Susan, stepped forward recently to commit their resources to Divinity Tomorrow. Like many in ministry for whom limited resources make giving a stretch, the Martys nevertheless feel that this is a moment they cannot miss. “Yale Divinity does more than lead you in good paths,” he says. “The place also fosters initiative. I learned at Yale Divinity School what leadership in the Church means... I certainly feel that Yale Divinity School’s role in American theological education is too important to neglect or to allow us to behave as if we who have graduated can be mere token givers.” He hopes others feel similarly: “My wife and I are certainly enthused for the future of Yale Divinity School. I hope that others who are stretched in their resources will wage the wonderful war of the heart to know that we are being faithful when we determine what contribution of significance we can make to what is shaping up as a very important capital campaign.”
