Elijah Heyward, III serves as the director of the Youth Scholar Academy (YSA) at the Institute for Responsible Citizenship in Washington, D.C. He created the framework for the Academy as a Yale President's Public Service fellow during his time at Yale Divinity School Student. YSA hosts summer enrichment sessions for schools and youth serving institutions from across the country. The program's mission is to prepare high school males from disadvantaged backgrounds to thrive in high school, college, and beyond. He is also the Director of Admissions and Development at the John Leland Center, a Baptist Seminary in Northern Virginia.

While at Yale Divinity School, he served on the Student Council, Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee, and as Co-Chair of the Black graduate network.  Heyward is a native of Beaufort, South Carolina, and graduate of Hampton University's Honors College and William R. Harvey Leadership Institute.  He is also a founder of the  Hampton University Museum's Biggers' Circle. He is currently participating in the Princeton Alumni Corp's Emerging Leader's Program and is an active member of the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA.
