Jonathan Edwards & American Puritanism
This reading course is designed to offer students an opportunity for intensive reading in and reflections upon the significance of early America’s premier philosophical theologian through an examination of the writings of the Puritans, through engagement with his own writings, and through selected recent studies of Euro-Indian contact. The course is meant, through primary and secondary literature, to familiarize students with the life and times of Edwards and to encourage reading and discussion about Edwards’ background, historical and intellectual contexts, and legacy.
No prerequisites, though coursework in early American history or related topics an advantage.
Weekly responses via V2, leading at least one class discussion, and term paper.
Regular class attendance, participation, oral reports, research and writing.
