Course Description: 

This course is designed to help those training for lay and ordained ministry to improve their musical and vocal skills as part of the larger process of their transformation into living instruments of God.  The course is comprised of three components: skill development, spiritual formation, and theological reflection. 

Background Expected: 

No background required.  Experience singing or playing a musical instrumental helpful but not expected.

Course Requirements: 

a.        Participation in and Preparation for Class Discussions and Masterclasses

b.       Participation in and Preparation for individual weekly Voice Lessons

c.        Assigned Readings, Videos, and/or Audio Materials

d.       Weekly Journaling Assignments

e.        Worship Observation and Analysis Paper

f.        Small Group Project: Class Presentation on a Musical Style

g.       Whole Class Project: Marquand Chapel Worship Service

h.       Individual Project: Final Project presentation (in class)

      i.        short occasional assignments (e.g., student profile; voice lessons goals and self-evaluation)

Basis of Evaluation: 

Participation (40%) – class and lesson attendance and preparation, completion of short assignments

Papers and Presentations (40%) – worship observation paper, individual and small group presentations, journal

Group Project (20%) – Marquand Chapel Service participation
