Course Description: 

This course will work through almost the whole of John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion. Students will work together as a group to focus on the structure, arguments, and contexts of the work. Particular attention will be given to analysis of the theological, literary, and historical aspects of the book, and students will be challenged to formulate their analysis of Calvin’s methods and intentions. 

Background Expected: 

Familiarity with historical theology and Reformation history. 

Course Requirements: 

Weekly required reading of the Institutes

Basis of Evaluation: 

Short weekly presentations, seminar participation, online discussion contributions, and end of semester analysis of the form and arguments of the Institutes (15 pages)
