A completely subjective New Haven “best” list

So, this post started out small – I just wanted a short list of some of the cool places that I and my current-student friends find charming, delicious and fun. A New Haven “best” list, if you will. I did a totally unofficial, unscientific poll of a few YDS friends and got a ton of excellent thoughts, ideas and tips. Because I felt that I had to do their work justice, I included everything below. Ergo, this post is a lot longer and a lot more detailed than planned.

Since this is a LONG list, there are no consequences should you choose to skip this post. If you do choose to wade through all of this, enjoy!

Sincere thanks to Peter Lynch, Paul Reese, Abbie Storch, Lauren Griffith, Randy Derrick, Claire Repsholdt, Cate Anthony, Anna Thurston, Andrea Alvord and Sally Hansen for their responses!

Best breakfast:

  • The Pantry (definitively)
  • Bella’s (Westville)
  • Maison Mathis
  • I’d also throw in Donut Crazy

Best brunch:

  • Claire’s Corner Copia (a meat-free restaurant, aka heaven for a vegetarian like me!)
  • Atelier Florian – a clear favorite for several categories
  • Skip brunch and hit an after-church sort of a diner where you can see a different crowd - The Greek Olive in the La Quinta Inn near IKEA is a standby

Best ice cream:

  • Arethusa – they have a farm in Litchfield, but visit their retail store on Chapel St.
  • Bill’s Carousel -over a dozen scooped and soft serve flavors, plus floats, sundaes, and froyo.

Best Thai Food:

  • Rice Pot
  • Pad Thai (I know it’s a dish but the restaurant is also called Pad Thai)
  • Thai Taste, but they are closed for building renovations. I think they have a truck though.
  • Thai Taste - Though they are gone for a while…so none.  There is no Thai left in New Haven…
  • York St Noodle House: more pan-asian than thai, but cheap and fast and tasty.

Best Mexican Food:

  • Mezcal on State St
  • Geronimo – they do the making the guac in front of you thing
  • Burrito Express food cart by the Whale (get the torta!)
  • Best Latin food overall is Rubamba
  • The food trucks along Long Wharf, there is no other.

Best Sushi:

  • Miya’s – they use invasive species, including plants, to make some very unusual and delicious sushi. Not your standard sushi but really good!
  • Tokyo Sushi II (it’s a drive up I-91, but it’s SO GOOD)
  • Sushi Palace (a la carte)
  • Sushi on Chapel, where it is always cool, the sushi is always purple, there is always a table for you

Other cuisine suggestions:

  • Moroccan:the Kasbah Garden Cafe (Moroccan place in West Chapel – approved by someone who lived in Morocco for two years!)
  • Greek: Kalimera (love it and it also is highly endorsed and frequented by my Greek friends).
  • Chinese: Great Wall
  • Fast food: Pita Ziki, Tikkaway (aka the Indian Chipotle)

Best bottomless coffee: Cedarhurst Café

Best new coffeehouse that’s also the closest to the Div school:Fussy Coffee on Winchester Ave. (We might be having a pre-BTFO thing there; stay tuned….)

  • Barcelona (dinner)
  • Maison Mathis (brunch/lunch)

  • Caffe Bravo on Orange St – close to YDS campus, especially good for lunch
  • Heirloom – located within The Study Hotel (tip: a swank place for your parents to stay, if you have swank parents) on Chapel St.
  • Harvest Wine Bar
  • A) If your parents are buying: Near Campus: Tarry Lodge - perfect seating and lighting for long catching up conversations; On State Street: L’Orcio - comfortable old italian coziness and more great staff B) if you’re buying: Yorkside Pizza - Yale flair everywhere and great food at spendable prices
