YDS students, faculty, and staff, as well as the greater Yale and New Haven communities, are invited to a reception at the Divinity School on Tuesday, March 31, to mark the opening of the new Margaret Olin photography exhibit in the Sarah Smith Gallery.
Titled “Gone Like a Sip of Water”—an Arabic expression referring to a sudden or pointless death—the exhibit showcases photographs taken by Olin at the Dheisheh Refugee Camp in Bethlehem in the West Bank from 2014 to 2019.
The reception, featuring brief remarks by the artist, will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the gallery and Old Common Room.
Margaret Olin is Senior Research Scholar at Yale University with appointments in the Divinity School, Department of Religious Studies, Program in Jewish Studies, and Department of the History of Art. She is the author of Touching Photographs (University of Chicago Press) and the curator of Shaping Community: Poetics and Politics of the Eruv. Another of her collections, Can Rocks Feel Pain: The Bitter Landscapes of Palestine, is currently on view at Yale’s Whitney Humanities Center.
Olin has been photographing murals and children in Dheisheh since 2014 and, in her words, “talking to the artists, listening to their controversies, their doubts and, when they have them, their hopes.”
