Students, faculty, and staff are invited to a lecture by Professor David Fergusson of the University of Edinburgh at YDS on Tuesday, February 21st. The lecture, entitled “The Theology of Providence: What Happened to It?” will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Niebuhr Hall.
Despite shifts in expression, theological confidence in the providence of God remained strong throughout much of modernity. Why then did it decline so suddenly in the twentieth century? This lecture will chart the underlying causes and problems, before assessing recent attempts to construct an intellectually chastened but religiously adequate account.
David Fergusson is Professor of Divinity and Principal of New College at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is the author of Faith and Its Critics (Oxford University Press, 2009), based on his 2008 Gifford Lectures, and co-editor of the Cambridge Companion to Reformed Theology (Cambridge University Press, 2016). He is a Fellow of the British Academy.
