Elizabeth Burns joins YDS as embedded counselor for students

January 12, 2024

Yale Divinity School Dean Greg Sterling made the following announcement today to the YDS community:

I am pleased to inform you of a key addition to the YDS staff who will be a tremendous resource to students. Elizabeth Burns has joined us as our new embedded counselor.

Elizabeth is a licensed clinical social worker who has worked in mental health settings around the country and abroad. She most recently provided outpatient therapy at a private practice in New Haven. Elizabeth draws from a variety of therapeutic models in her practice, with a primary focus on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. She earned her M.S.W. from the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice at the University of Chicago.

In her new role, Elizabeth will serve as a part-time counselor working for Yale Mental Health & Counseling in coordination with the YDS Office of Student Affairs. She will be providing community programming and short-term individual therapeutic support to YDS students. Her office is located on the lower level of the northeast building (near the Jonathan Edwards Center), and she will be in person at YDS an average of two days a week.

Here is more information on support services offered by our newly embedded counselor:

  • Confidential drop-in therapy appointments for brief treatment and consultation; students may also use drop-in sessions as interim support while getting connected to long-term care. (Please note that drop-in appointments are not a substitute for crisis services; students experiencing an emergency or in need of immediate support should use Mental Health & Counseling’s 24/7 on-call service at 203-432-0290, or call 911.)
  • Group therapy to address common mental health concerns among YDS students
  • Interactive workshops on mental health and graduate school topics

I would like to thank Vicki Flippin for her role in recruiting Elizabeth, as well as Lynn Sullivan.

Please join me in welcoming Elizabeth to the YDS community!
