Ensign Lecture: Trading Kennedy for Kavanaugh: What’s at stake for religious freedom?

When United States Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, President Donald Trump moved quickly to replace him with Judge Brett Kavanaugh. The White House has said that the appointment is part of President Trump’s efforts to “reshape[] the judiciary,” work that “goes hand-in-hand” with the president’s program to “promot[e] individual liberties and religious freedoms.” Melissa Rogers will consider some ways in which Justice Kennedy’s voice and vote mattered in religious freedom cases, and how a Justice Kavanaugh might change that calculus.
