People Notes: Otis Moss III wins NAACP award

Otis Moss III ’95 M.Div. is a winner of the NAACP Chairman’s Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations using “their distinct platforms to be agents of change.” The award was presented at the 47th NAACP Image Awards on February 5.

“We celebrate this recognition of Otis Moss III, whose life and ministry are a shining example of what we strive for and aspire to achieve,” YDS Dean Greg Sterling said. “Well done, Otis!”

Margaret Farley, Gilbert L. Stark Professor Emerita of Christian Ethics, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society of Christian Ethics.

The award from the Society of Christian Ethics recognizes outstanding and enduring contributions to the field of Christian ethics, with an emphasis on scholarship that defines the issues Christian ethicists must address; influence within the field of Christian ethics as manifested in the work of the recipient’s students; and the influence of the recipient’s scholarship in promoting the importance and relevance of Christian ethics for audiences beyond the discipline itself and beyond the academy.

Farley received the award at the society’s annual meeting, held January 8 in Toronto.

Martha Smalley, Special Collections Librarian and Curator of the Day Missions Collection at the Divinity Library, has retired after 40 years of service.

Library Director Stephen Crocco praised Smalley for developing the library’s Special Collections program into a resource of world renown and for her service as reference and instruction librarian and coordinator of various digital projects. “Martha has been a steady friend and a respected colleague in the Yale community, in the American Theological Library Association, in the Overseas Ministries and Study Center, and in the lives of countless scholars who value the history of Christian missions,” Crocco said.

Smalley will continue as a part-time consultant for the Divinity Library.

Roger Martin ‘68 B.D. has published a new book, Off to College: A Guide for Parents (University of Chicago Press). Martin, the former president of Randolph-Macon College, is president of the higher education consulting firm Academic Collaborations. The book is a guide to parents who are making the adjustment to their children being away at college.
