Resources at Yale: Downtown Classes

Among the incredible opportunities that come with being a student at Yale Divinity School, it can be easy to miss some of the possibilities opened up by being part of the wide Yale University family. So, as we get closer and closer to the start of term, we’re going to post a few blogs describing resources well worth taking advantage of to make the very most of your time at YDS! First up:

Downtown Classes

Yale Divinity School offers an incredible array of classes, covering almost everything you could hope to learn. But as you’re looking over class lists and trying to put together your timetable, it is well worth remembering: being a student at Yale Divinity School means that you are eligible to enroll in graduate or professional school courses, within the context of your M.Div. or M.A.R. programs, and are encouraged to do so, as long as you meet the general prerequisites for the course as prescribed by its instructor and with the instructor’s written permission (please see the YDS Bulletin for details). Want to learn the concrete practicalities of non-profit management? You can take a class on non-profit management at the School of Management. Want to delve into the intricacies of law and religion? You can take a class at the Yale Law School. Particularly interested in how esoteric philosophers can inform our understanding contemporary faith? Check out the philosophy courses offered over the year. And if you want to explore how urban planning impacts the formation of faith communities in the modern world, then you can take graduate programs in Urban Studies.

Of course, some classes have particular prerequisites, and it’s not always possible to take all the classes you want. But exploring the classes offered across Yale University can provide opportunities for a truly diverse program of study. And it’s also incredibly simple on an administrative level. You simply need to download the Downtown Permission Slip from the Div School website, get the class instructor’s permission to take the course, and finalize your schedule with your advisor.
