Introducing the BTFO 2017 Leadership Team: Shancia Jarrett

To all admitted students matriculating in 2017: welcome to Yale Divinity School, from your “Before the Fall” Orientation (BTFO) Leadership team. We can’t wait to meet all of you soon. We’re going to be getting quite a bit of information out to you on this blog over the next few months—and we’ll do our best to answer your questions and provide resources so that you can feel confident you know what’s going on as you prepare to travel to New Haven. First, we’re going to introduce our selves over the next few days, beginning with Shancia, your BTFO coordinator.

What’s your name and what program are you in?

I’m Shancia Jarrett, and I’m a 2nd year MDiv.

Where are you from?

I was born in Jamaica, West Indies and migrated to the United States of America. I grew up in New York City and, after completing my MA in Disability Studies, relocated to New Haven.

What did you do before arriving at YDS?

Prior to attending Yale Divinity School, I worked in housing and disability services. In New York City, I served as a Community Rehabilitation Specialist for disabled adolescents. And in New Haven I worked for the Housing Authority of New Haven and Saint Hilda’s House, an intentional community of young adults.

What have you enjoyed most about your time at YDS?

I love the community at YDS—it does an amazing job of inviting students to participate in the academic and social life of Yale.

One of your favorite ways to rest and relax through the semester?

My favorite way to relax is to spend time with friends and to take weekend trips away from New Haven.

One piece of advice you would give to incoming students?

I encourage incoming students to be mindful of their time. Time management and wellness are vital for one’s well-being at YDS.
