Daniel Garrett, M.Div.
Dan and Susan [YDS ’69] make our home in Berryville, Virginia. I retired in 2003 while teaching United Methodist Studies at Union Presbyterian Seminary, Virginia Union University School of Theology, and Eastern Mennonite Seminary. I was appointed to teach after serving six pastoral appointments in the Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church. I continued teaching at the two Richmond Seminaries until 2008 and at Eastern Mennonite Seminary until 2014.
Susan retired in 2008, while serving in Richmond, Virginia as the Director of Connectional Ministries for The United Methodist Virginia Conference. Susan served seven years as the District Superintendent of the Harrisonburg District, after completing fifteen years as pastor of Grace UMC in Middletown, Virginia.
In retirement I serve as Chaplain of the Clarke County Virginia Sheriff’s Department and the Berryville Police Department. I am Past-Chair of the Advisory Board of the Winchester Corps of The Salvation Army. I sing in the choir at Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester, Virginia, and chair a community group developing affordable senior housing in Berryville.
Publications include Windows on God’s World and Charges to Keep: Pastoral Reports to Various Churches, and a republication of my ancestor Rev. Henry Smith’s 1848 journal under the title: Recollections and Reflections of An Old Itinerant: Letters of the Rev. Henry Smith – Annotated 2014.
We have two sons, David and Joshua, both research electrical engineers in California. We make frequent trips there to visit with them and our daughters-in-law Marcy and Ngoc, and our four grandchildren Zachary, Jonathan, Benjamin, and June.
