With our town finding itself with a new library and a resulting influx of new volunteers, I’ve taken on a new volunteer challenge: taking the library on the road, bringing it on a weekly basis to the shelter for the homeless. Ironically, with the rescue squad I used to go to the shelter regularly; except then we never entered a room without the police going in first to ensure it was safe. Now I just go, offering the library as perhaps one link in helping a person to turn their life around. It’s sobering, seeing people who with a couple of backpacks and a wheeled container, can carry all their possessions in one load.
