Your greetings remind Sibyl and me that you remain important actors in our lives and that we still have special ties even though we are separated by many miles.  Several medical emergencies challenged us in 2017.  Sibyl’s right knee was successfully replaced in January.  Unfortunately, a tibia nerve was impaired; the residual numbness will take up to two years to heal completely. She refuses to let this slow her down.  I was hospitalized in January, April, and late November for three separate problems.  I spent most of the year healing from each. As we seek to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges presented by these issues, we derive strength, comfort, and hope from Psalm 21:1: “The Lord is my light and my wholeness; whom shall I fear?”  We recognize and are grateful that this wholeness is abundantly provided daily through the loving care of our family members, friends, neighbors, and medical teams.  Our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are doing well.

During these dark days in our nation’s life, two lines from Albert Camus provide inspiration:  “There is more to admire than to despise in men;” and, “While walking on the beach at Tipasa, I learned that in the midst of winter, there is an invincible summer, [a wellspring of love and joys that renew my commitment to fight for justice].”  We wish you a happy, joyful, fulfilling 2018 with a bit more compassion, justice, and peace in our world. —Sibyl and Nick
