I left my practice of family medicine at Dartmouth in July of this past year to return to Arkansas to participate in a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine. After 22 years as a family doc I am finally fully engaging all of my background and training in medicine, sociology, philosophy, and ethics. Things have come full circle. I started my career in medicine birthing babies. Through the next twenty years I've held hands, supported limps, removed appendices, hugged the grieving and rejoiced with the relieved. Seems fitting that the latter third of my career should be  focused on comfort and quality of life for those whose time is precious.  Every day is filled with wonder and meaning. Every day is worthwhile.
