Queer Pastoral Residency
The Queer Pastoral Residency is a new initiative of First Church Somerville, which started in 2022. The QPR provides a “first call” opportunity for LGBTQIA+ (queer) people at the beginning of their pastoral ministry. In the first iteration of the program, the resident served three-quarter time at First Church Somerville and one-quarter time with the Southern New England Conference. For the next round of our program (2024-2026) the resident will serve full time in the local church. We are excited to begin accepting applications in February of 2024!
This two-year residency provides the pastoral resident with experience in worship leadership, preaching, faith formation, and transformative community engagement in an affirming, creative (and very queer) church environment.
A candidate should…
- Be a member of the LGBTQIA community who is interested in serving in local church ministry.
- Have completed their MDIV (or the equivalent) and 1 unit of CPE by September 2024.
- Be “ordainable pending call” or in the ordination process with their local UCC association (or at a similar point in another Christian denomination).
- Willing to relocate within a commutable distance to Somerville, Massachusetts.
- Ready to make a two year commitment to the residency program.
The application will be posted soon! If you have any questions in the meantime, you can email QPR@FirstChurchSomerville.org. We’d be happy to have early conversations with interested candidates!
