Solo Pastor (full-time)

Downtown United Presbyterian Church (DUPC) in Rochester, NY is seeking a full-time solo pastor with a minimum of 2-5 years of experience as a pastor and head of staff.

DUPC is a More Light church proud of its leadership in the Sanctuary movement and the LGBTQ ordination rights movement in the Presbyterian Church (USA). We are not content to rest on our laurels, though we face problems similar to other mainline Protestant churches: an aging and shrinking membership, a large building, and a community that is increasingly unchurched. We accept the challenges of the Matthew 25 movement to engage homelessness, poverty, racism, and unjust policing practices in Rochester. We understand that the journey outward to address social injustices must be accompanied by a journey inward to revitalize spiritual resources.

An installed pastor would lead worship with a talented Director of Ministry Music; collaborate with a Director of Operations to manage the building and its tenants; join with the Session to define the mission of the church relative to its endowment and facilities. The congregation is diverse and aging, and pastoral care needs are shared with an active and skilled Board of Deacons. Two areas of concern are how to nurture young families and how to appeal to non-church goers of all ages. Our pastor should help us let go of what can’t be done, and faithfully lead us to embrace what must be done.
