Students may defer their educational loans, provided they are registered at least half-time (6 credit hours) per semester. Each lending institution initiates the deferment process by sending forms directly to the student. After filling out the necessary parts of the form and signing, the student may bring the form to the Registrar’s Office for processing. Please note that the form will not be processed until after the drop/add period of the fall semester.
Yale University uses the services of the National Student Clearinghouse, which means that information is sent electronically at least three times during the semester for currently enrolled students to lenders who participate in this service. Information on the Clearinghouse may be found at http://www.studentclearinghouse.org. You may check to see if your lender is a participant or track your deferment online. If your lender is not a participant, you will need to get the appropriate deferment form from your lender.
